Is there Uber in Cartagena?

Yes, Taxis and ride-share apps like Uber & InDrive are widely used and very affordable. Always confirm the fare before starting your ride, or use the app for fixed pricing. Once you are in the city center, most places are walkable. You’ll most likely not need to take a taxi to places once you’re at your hotel.

Will we need to take taxis?

The Old City is very walkable and safe during the day and evening, especially in well-trafficked areas. Once you’re in the historic city center from the airport, everything is walkable. The streets are historic and it’s difficult for cars to fit in all of them. The wedding venue, restaurants and hotels are all within walking distance of each other, so you most likely will not need a taxi once you arrive to the city center!

Is Cartagena safe?

Absolutely. Cartagena is one of Colombia’s most popular tourist destinations and is considered very safe for travelers, especially in the historic center and beachfront areas where most visitors stay. Like any major city, it’s always wise to take standard precautions—stay in well-lit areas at night, keep an eye on your belongings, and use trusted transportation—but the city itself is very welcoming, vibrant, and used to hosting international visitors.

We’ve spent time here ourselves and wouldn’t have chosen it for our wedding if we didn’t feel confident in its safety. If you have any concerns or questions about traveling here, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re happy to help!

What are the local customs in Colombia?

Colombians are warm, hospitable, and love when visitors make an effort to speak even a little Spanish—so don’t be shy! While Spanish is the official language, many locals in tourist areas understand basic English. However, learning a few Spanish phrases can enhance your experience and is appreciated by the locals.

Tap water is technically safe in Cartagena, but most locals and visitors stick to bottled or filtered water just to be cautious.

What’s the currency exchange and do I need to bring cash?

Colombia uses the Colombian peso (COP). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and most shops, but it’s helpful to carry some cash for smaller vendors or taxis.

You’ll find plenty of ATMs in the city. We suggest using ATMs inside banks or shopping centers for extra security.

A 10% tip is typically included in your restaurant bill (look for “servicio incluido”), but you can always leave a bit extra for great service. 5 pesos goes a long way for locals in Colombia.

What’s the dress code(s)?

Cartagena has a warm tropical climate and is very HOT! Light, breathable clothing is recommended during the day. For evenings, especially when dining out, casual attire is common. The dress code is generally relaxed, but people tend to dress nicely for dinner or going out.
